Rather than try to rewrite the whole thing I thought that i would be lazy and post a link to an Aussy woodwork forum I'm on about how the spiral egg cups are done. I hope that it's OK??

Well, back in the workshop again and this time with a bit of very spalted beech. I wondered if it would take the forces of the lathe and thought that it was OK until it let go!! A fair sized bit bounced off my shoulder and I finished up with 4 bits. One bit still on the lathe and the other 3 on the floor!!

I collected them and checked 'the fit' and it looked OK so out came the glue. Then some careful power sanding to finish, it was nearly there, cleaned up and hard wa applied and this is the result.

The marking on it is called spalting and is caused by fungus and is the start of the rotting of the wood, hence the weakness and the 3D jigsaw puzzle!! I am really pleased with it though. One of the essencials for wood like this is a GOOD dust mask because the fungus is not very friendly. Mine is a positive pressure mask and face protection. A small fan pulls air through filters and pumps it down into the mask, past the clear visor, so that it stays clear and doesn't mist. Not cheap, but essecential for spalted wood.

The spalting won't go any further now and just like Blackpool rock, the markings go all the way through 8-) 8-)

Ta folks. It really is a one off and I didn't see the join either, until it let go x_x x_x

I have said it before, but one of the most wonderful bits of turning is that although you can see the shape developing you can't see the grain and markings until you stop it spinning. It's always different and for me it's always a surprise.

I can look at a lump of wood and take a guess, but :-?? :-?? :-??

Edit : - I just had a look at my signature and thought??

Each bit is unique, just like all the others :O3 :O3
