RIP.

My wife has a demo vinyl 45 of 'get by with a little help from my friends' - will stick it on for some fond memories.

He always looked rather stiff when he sang. What a voice ....

He deserves every minute of every tribute. I think everyone has their own personal favourite amongst his songs, you can't argue X over Y.

As a young man I was back in the UK around May 1969. My friends said they were going to the Isle of Wight for The Who and Bob Dylan and did I fancy going as well. I was in UK for another week and took the chance to go with them, I hadn't got a ticket for the two days (I think it was just a weekend?) of the Festival so the first day I watched The Who and some others but I remember well this chap coming on and singing in a way I had never heard before, it was of course Joe Cocker, the next day we got in to see his Bobness, who was the main reason for me to go but Joe Cocker stood out for me the day before and yes, it was his rendition of With a Little Help from My Friends that made him stand out. I was a fan forever more after that weekend.

I hitched down to that on the friday evening and slept on top of the hill in the open air. I was surrounded by tents when I woke up next morning.
Can you remember the crap we had to put up with whilst waiting for sunday evening? Blodwyn Pig, Fat Mattress etc.
Don't recall seeing Joe, but then again I spent a lot of time staggering about looking for food. Managed to get some boiled rice on the saturday from a food tent, then got a pass out and walked to a little store not far from the gates and bought a couple of packets of biscuits that I ate on the sunday. No wonder I was knackered when I got home on monday afternoon.
Walked from one side of London to the other in the early hours of monday morning - didn't know it was so big untill then
We do some bonkers things when we're young....

My mate Denny's, Mum made enough sandwiches to feed half of us on the hill ! :)) After that lot went I really cannot remember where we sought food.
We couldn't get on a ferry back on Monday, a couple of the lads had to be back at work Tuesday and were OK but a few of us had no reason to rush back, so just stayed on for 24 hours and come back on the Tuesday.

I bow to you remembering some of the other bands, we knew the Edgar Broughton band from appearances around Richmond, same for Aynsley Dunbar. Remember a good set from Richie Havens but it was The Who and Bob Dylan along with Joe that gave me my best memories. I think it is at this stage when we should admit that we were perhaps out of it for certain periods of time :D

Somewhere on my bookshelves I have the 69ers book, now I believe called something like When Dylan sunk the Island or?

IMO we have lost a vocal artist who really can be mentioned in the same sentence as the greats such as Sinatra, Billie Holliday, Dusty, Pavarotti, Kiri te Kanawa. That is someone whose ability to take a piece of music and turn it into something astonishing; something beyond the ordinary, beyond what a human voice should be able to do.

Not bad for a Yorkshire lad.
