Not seen him live as lucky you, but on TV, Mezzo, many times.
A true artist.

Sad news :(
I saw him when he gave a concert near London probably over 40 years ago. Absolutely brilliant and unforgettable. I remember hearing classical guitarists being very scathing about him, saying that the Camargue produced many such gypsy guitarists. But I thought he was fantastic, you could hear a pin drop just before he started to play.
I still enjoy his music.

"Jusqu'à 80 personnes vivaient de ses subsides, femmes, enfants, oncles, neveux... Il confiera avoir "plusieurs femmes illégitimes", sans savoir exactement combien d'enfants il a engendré: entre 24 et 28. Mais le guitariste génial en a reconnu au moins 13. Manitas de Plata, considéré un temps comme l'artiste européen le plus connu au monde, laisse une oeuvre immense avec plus 80 disques enregistrés et 93 millions d'albums vendus à travers le monde."
:D

A coincidental story from when I went with my Wife and another couple to Brighton, we think it was probably 1973 to see Manitas de Plata. My want to see him came from the couple we went with who were fans and my want was from the years of the vindange in Serignan when the manouche would play after supper.

Anyway the day after the concert I was on a weeks wine course with Saccone & Speed and staying in London (in the hotel, name forgotten, it was the one that had the underground running past but it was hidden by boards which were painted with an underground scene?) when the same evening and very late, some of us were at the bar having a late drink and Manitas, the band and a host of family & friends entered. They were all staying in the same hotel as us. The next hour was magical, I guess the adrenalin from the concert they had just played in London was still pumping round their bodies, they played whilst the women danced a genuine flamenco. I have the programme signed but 'er indoors after an hour of searching came up with a host of other memorabilia but still can't find it. In the meantime I know that the photo here is the cover of the same programme I have.

Interesting video, KTTH - and it would appear that Bik's son Mario has the talent to do even better than Manitas !!

I still have "Juerga !" which I must have bought some time during the late 60s ..... it's pretty worn as it got played to death ....

No mobile phones back then and try as I might on that late night, I couldn't get through to the couple who had been with us in Brighton. A day later when my OH saw her friend who had been with us, she couldn't believe it and said her husband would be so angry that we couldn't get hold of him as he said he would have immediately driven up from Sunbury that very evening !! ;)

Today of course one can take a video with a mobile phone but.......
