A friend researching for her Masters degree has asked me to explain a French text in English
What would your version of this element of the first paragraph be?
"les êtres vivants ressemblent à ceux qui les produisent"

Something of the order of "people take after their parents". I know exactly what it means and I'm sure there's better expression in English, but I'm darned if I can think of it at the moment !
I'll ask OH this evening when he gets in - he's rather good at that sort of thing !

It's not just humans though - "êtres vivants" could be animals too.
Living things/beings or even animals (?) look like their parents

Sometimes one needs to know the context !
I found the exact phrase concerned in a book about prostitution in Paris (see Google) ! It talks of the law of nature, and that good and evil can be passed down through the generations.

Like father, like son?

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree?

Or a bit of Shakespeare:

The sins of the father are to be laid upon the children.

That's exactly the context, and probably the book she has the text from!
Thank you all, you agree basically with my version that 'living beings ressemble their parents'
