Speaking of Cataluña, now is almost the season for eating calçots, which I think are called scallions in English.

Groups of people gather in restaurants or at home to devour them, burnt black on a fire, in great quantities, with a special sauce, in a special way, with much noise and drinking.

Eating them has slightly naughty overtones.

Watch the following video in English as well!

I'll eat most things but admit that looked disgusting at first sight, however on doing a Google search it seems to be ok.

I've never heard of them ! But I gather they're somewhere between an onion and a shallot. I love all things oniony so would probably enjoy calçots !

Our farmer neighbour grows something like that - they come up in clusters and are very strong.
He gave us some and I just used them for cooking - too strong to eat raw.

They are not at all strong tasting. Quite sweet, a bit like leeks.

Often do these on a barby, they are sweet, again the smaller one are better, I don't know what sauce they use, but a garlic, or slightly spicy or a smokey dip would go well, the French have "Bulb" salad onions these are like the English spring onion, not tried a comparison but I bet small leeks will taste the same. They are absolutely delicious as is the sauce that goes with them - I think it is based on almonds and red peppers.
