Now honestly this does not bother me, I'm not of the faith, but for Catholics with gluten problems does this mean they cannot take Mass?

Whilst of no faith, I would be more worried by this sentence, although it may be made from genetically modified organisms, the Vatican has ruled.

Whether they take communion is a matter for them - they can still attend mass. Communion wafers usedd to be made by nuns. Perhaps gluten-free wafers have to be made industrially? Maybe the the gluten-intolerant faithful should rely upon their faith to keep them safe. Before anyone accuses me of extreme cynicism, I'm certain it's what the nuns at my school would have said.

But vegetarians must be concerned at the prospect of transubstantiation - I mean you eat something innocuous and all of a sudden it becomes meat. Indeed, isn't it cannibalistic?

Someone else who does not do religion,

My son who was a veggie from a very young age, on moral rather than health grounds, was very particular with what he was eating.

When he was very young and an enthusiastic scoffer of my favourite McVitie's half-covered dark chocolate digestives, I told him that the chocolate was made from meat. It was a joke, but I then discovered the depth of his commitment when he stopped eating them. I was both proud and ashamed at the same time and, of course, told him it was ok.

Years later we find that animal fats are indeed involved in the manufacture of such things.

Food containing, or not containing, what might be expected is widespread.

Apparently Prawn Cocktail Crisps contain no prawn and Smokey Bacon Crisps contain no bacon - not that this fact stopped them being banned on religious grounds in Qatar!

I've no idea about crisps, but I suspect that the problem with 'chocolate' lies with the milk and/or the British versions, neither of which I regard as real chocolate.

I am of the opinion that the learned lady is correct, in her view, with regard to UK chocolate

Well at least it's an opinion and not a source of mockery. The fact is that the word chocolate, in English, means the sort of chocolate that is made and enjoyed in England, and for someone like the bloke I mentioned elsewhere, to deride and unsult the English for thinking that they were eating chocolate when in fact they weren't, and were therefore stupid and ignorant, is beyond the pale of civilised discussion.

I am of course, not for one moment attributing this to either of you, MAD and Peake, just explaining that we suffered this bloke for quite sometime till he was ostracised by the whole village, French and foreign, and driven out. A sore point as I am sure you can tell. #:-s
