Normally I don't report dogs that are lost and found without any form of ID in the belief that anybody who can't be bothered to look after their animals in this way does not deserve them, but a kindly finder would be better.

However, from time to time I make an exception. This Beaucie was found by my friend Sharon who with her husband Andy runs a kennels near Nontron. I know they are always flooded out with dogs because there are often 9 or 10 Dobermanns there on behalf of PAD, and I know how well they are looked after.

So, I like Beaucies, I know Sharon will struggle for the room, and I would like to help.

My friends have had no response to publication of this girl's (now named by them Janet, to which she answers) plight, despite publicity in all the right places. Vets, mairies, SPA, supermarkets, gendarmes etc.

My belief was that an unidentified dog, widely advertised with no result could be chipped and adopted after 10 days, and have often advised people of that, but Sharon says it is a year and a day.

She says that she could rehome Janet if her maire would authorise it, but this seems way out of line to me.

In my opinion, after taking all the steps mentioned above, the dog could be chipped and adopted/rehomed straight away, given that whoever owned it before is committing an offence in not IDing it.

Does anyone have a definitive answer to this I wonder?
