The problem with the other site that gave rise to this site is that it changed its name and software so many times it could be another other site for all I know as opposed to just the other site. Hence my confusion - but thanks for the clarification - now I understand.

I've been trying to remember the name of the forum that lead to the creation of TAFF, but I can't, although it all took place in the summer of 2007. I suspect that means it was totally unrelated to the creation of TFF.

It was probably the other forum as well, and not another other forum. Does Total France (sometimes maliciously converted to Total Farce) ring any bells?

I've never heard of TAFF, has Total France finished, or changed again, then?

Hi David, I now present TAFF

http://www.the-anglo-french-forum.co.uk/index.php#2

It has been a superb little forum, but not for much longer unfortunately.

Total France does ring a bell. Perhaps it was?

TAFF - otherwise known as The Anglo French Forum - is still going, although only for another ten days or so, until the hosting contract expires. Sadly, like so many other forums (but, evidently, not this one) TAFF suffered in recent years from a dwindling membership. While a hard core of about twenty active posters remained, the rest of the membership, which had once numbered in the hundreds, simply participated less and less. Social media websites like Facebook are so much easier, and clicking a 'like' button can be enough to give some people a sense of belonging, whereas a forum requires that you actually post something.

Although relatively small, TAFF was always a friendly, easy-going forum, where members shared a genuine interest in all things French. Dissent and acrimony was rare, and members just rubbed along nicely. We were assured that The France Forum holds to a similar ethos, and those of us who arrived here like refugees from a sinking ship hope that you'll forgive us the intrusion. There aren't many of us, and we'll try to blend in as best we can. Thanks.

First time I have seen it. Thanks Jonzjob for the peek.

Total France was the precurser of the French Entree, I think the owners of TF gave up and sold out to the commercial empire of FE, but I could be wrong. For me it all went downhill. I got banned for 13 days for making a little joke about the rules, following a similar joke made earlier by a mod. When I pointed that out, I was banned. Then they forgot me and the 13 days extended so I came over here permanently.

Before Total France there was another forum whose name escapes me. It was run by the English language newspaper in Bordeaux (whose name I have also forgotten) which went bust, and the forum followed suit. The editor was called Miranda I think and we crossed swords because they refused to even report the plight of a lorry driver gaoled in Perpignan without trial for 18 months when drugs were found in his sealed trailer from Spain. His case was strong because he collected the already loaded trailer and had therefore no access to its interior. Eventually they let him go for lack of evidence, but not before he had lost his wagon, his business and marriage.

There was one other formed I suppose about the same time as this one and for the same reasons, the changes at TF, but I forget its name. It too appeared open minded but had a darker side to it.

Well I hope our new members will enjoy it here - it's nice to get some new blood :-bd TFF is quieter than it was, but it doesn't have the silliness of some forums and it does seem possible to have different points of view without having a row or getting personal !
So welcome aboard and we look forward to some action \:D/

I guess it is a case of quality over quantity.

As I understand it, some sites gain their advertising revenue based on the volume of posts thus tolerate and even encourage certain posts and posters.

But to the topic in hand - welcome all!

Unfortunately advertising, like sponsors, has its downside - just look what it's done to televised sport.
But that could be a topic in itself !

I went onto TAFF this morning to say goodbye to all my cyber friends that I have spoken with almost every day for the past 7 years. Sadly it has now closed and I feel somewhat sad as it is the end of an era. I am finding this forum equally as friendly and will enjoy inputting things if and when I can think of something intelligent to say. .LOL.....

Just wanted to say thankyou to the regulars here on TFF for the welcome we've all received, and how good it is to see a few familiar names making the move from TAFF. As Bella mentioned earlier, the servers on TAFF closed down on the 7th, so the old forum is no more. (For those who care, I did complete a full archive late the previous evening, so all is not gone and lost for ever).

I see Andiek has arrived. She's a keen photographer, and was a very active member of our regular monthly photo competition on TAFF. I note TFF used to have one, but it seems to have lapsed. Was that through lack of support, or lack of anyone to manage it?

Not only that, but the one which had people guessing what and where it was in France. Despite my extensive travelling I rarely recognised anywhere, but did score a win with one I posted.

I suppose they just fizzled out. Maybe time for a resurrection. :-?

No, none of those reasons, Thumper. A few years ago, there were several keen (and very knowledgeable) photographers here, including me (keen !). A few members who no longer post on this forum thought some of the comments were too serious (how else can you learn ?) and objected to the term "happy snappers". It all became rather unpleasant, so we all found somewhere else to post our photos.

HOWEVER ..... there is no reason why there cannot be a renaissance of the photo section - there are several different categories so if anyone is interested, snap away :-bd

Tried to join a few weeks back but messed it up. My fault 100%. Started from scratch this morning and, bingo, here I am! Another ex-TAFFer on the books

NOTE FOR THE ADMIN.

I know that having two IDs is against the house rules. Could you please delete "Emile" and I'll continue with "Emile Deux". Cheers
