Doctors, dentists, nurses, physios, etc., have been called out on strike by 40 unions in protest over proposed reforms to the health system.

Next please!

Meanwhile, French unemployment just soared to a record high

Yeah well. Everyone knows it's better to have fewer jobs and more rights for the werkers, innit. I have some sympathy for the medical staff as most reforms seem to be undertaken without consultating those involved.

We've got a "situation" here with the German-owned French filiale having been placed in liquidiation judiciaire and impending loss of 383 jobs. Every two or three days there's a sizeable chunk of the local news devoted to the antics ... sorry actions ... of the workers to save their jobs. The usual story - wildcat strikes, kidnapping the local manager, meetings with the minister, manifestations outside the mairie/préfecture/Elysée. At the weekend, 100 of them downed tools and went to Frankfurt to "put pressure on the German owners" to come up with a solution.

They already did: liquidation judiciaire. L-)

If the workers put as much time and effort into looking for potential future owners they might save a good number of their jobs. Instead, it's becoming just another Goodyear.

And in other local news, a doomed-to-fail tile factory has - predictably - failed. Yesterday's top story was the tragic tale of how the Comité d'Entreprise can no longer fulfil its duties because the electricty was cut off. Cue photo of the CE people "working" at the expense of the company, in the offices provided by the company, (not) using computers, printers and photocopiers funded by the company. Funnily enough, it appears the cause of the panne was deliberate damage to the tableau which will take several months to fix. The administrator suggested the CE rent a generator!
