Unless a policy has a specific duration, it is tacitly (automatically) renewed, subject to the right of both policy holder and insurer to terminate before renewal - without having to give reasons.

The policyholder must notify the insurer in writing 2 months before the renewal date. The company is not obliged to acknowledge the notice.

The termination notice period may vary for individual health insurance policies and business policies (comprehensive business cover, business loss etc.).

If the termination deadline is missed, the policy continues and the next premium is payable.

Termination at renewal does not apply to life insurance.

What your insurer must tell you

Tacitly renewed annual policies (e.g., car insurance): the insurer must state the date by which the policyholder may terminate the policy, either on the premium notice itself or in a separate document.

If this notice is sent to you less than 15 days before - or after - the termination cut-off date, you then have 20 days from the notice dispatch date to terminate the policy.

If no reminder is sent, the policy can be ended without penalty at any time after the renewal date by sending a LRAR letter to the insurer.

These provisions apply only to policies covering private individuals, and exclude professional cover. They do not apply to life insurance, group policies or other collective insurance.

Termination on certain events

Both policyholder and insurer may terminate when certain events occur - change of address or occupation, marriage, retirement, etc.

The policyholder may terminate by LRAR letter within 3 months from the date of the event, provided that the changed situation affects the risk covered (e.g., moving house, renting a different apartment, changing occupation from footballer to ballet dancer, etc.).

The termination notice takes effect 1 month after its receipt by the insurer. The portion of premium for the period when the risk is no longer covered is refunded.

Thanks Liz.

The minimum 15 days still applies to the insurer. The policyholder has 20 days from the renewal notice date to cancel the cover, and the same period if the insurer gives less than 15 days’ notice.
