I specifically asked for one that she wasn't ever going to wear again, and then explained to her what I was going to use it for.

She seemed to be quite relieved when I told her I wasn't going to wear it!

Sorry Mandy - the end of the photo challenge has caught me on the hop - I thought I had a few more days. Love the photos that have been posted - super quality stuff. I must pay more attention to the end date and get my act together earlier (but then that would mean changing a habit of a lifetime. 8-| )

Apologies from me too - rather a lot on my mind at the moment ... :(

Thanks, Sue, but I don't think they're quite the challenge Mandy's looking for ;)

Yes, perhaps an explanation from dr orloff would be appropriate.

Explanation as requested.

I judged the previous assignment and an ultimatum was sent 20 hours and 12 minutes after the competition closed for entries:

Dr Orloff,

The time has passed for you to judge the photo comp No 35, if you continue to maintain silence about the result of the competition, you leave the mods no option but to select another person to be the judge of photo comp No 35, within the next 24 hours

This is a joint decision taken by all the mods and admin

I found this the following day and also the announcement that an alternate judge had been found. I judged the competition anyway choosing only the winner but I didn't give the feedback that I had been working on or other placements as I could not comment on photos submitted by those who thought it best for me not to judge. For this competition I will judge within a day or so of its closing as usual. Although I do accept the right of the team to amend the way in which the competition normally functions I would request anyone wishing to implement amendments not to enter. That way conflicts of interest are avoided and everyone's happy.

Have I got this wrong, I thought the competition was for photos ? surely the photo should then be judged ! regardless of who had taken it ! personal feelings should not affect the decision at all in my opinion !

I assume the Mods thought dr.o was not going to give results because he hadn't posted that the comp had closed and would be back with results, as has become the norm. :-? :-??

As there seems to be confusion about the amount of time taken between the end of these competitions and the judges posted results, could the Mods post the "official" time limit for judging please. So it can be added to the list of rules.
I wouldn't want to fall foul of it myself and could easily do so not knowing how long we have to reply before being ousted as judge.

At the risk of opening a can of worms .... ^#(^

I wondered if it is worth thinking again about whether a challenge and an assignment is a bit too much for the few of us who now post photos (some of the time!) to these two sections. I know originally it was intended that the challenge was that bit harder, but it seems to me that not much separates the two these days.

As Rob is choosing the topic for both of them - well done Rob - I wondered whether from now onwards we should just go with one "challenging assignment" every two weeks. :D

What d'you think? (I'm happy to go with the flow on this, but thought it worth raising.)

I would agree with that. I always thought the Assignment was to motivate people to go and do something specific and challenging as opposed to the monthly competition where you can enter old photos as well as new.
So it is a challenge in my view.

The rules can be changed so the photos must be submitted via "Attachment" to show the EXIF data, comments and discussion allowed so people can learn and improve, if that's what everyone wants.

I'm not worried either way, though I've enjoyed the extra challenge. The only reason I didn't manage to enter Balham's comp was because of illness.

If there's a wish to continue with 2 comps outside the monthly one then I'll continue to enjoy them both.

I wouldn't mind only having one ( other than the monthly) as long as the rules were the same as the ones currently used in the photo challenge. I don't think that dropping one of the comps will have any effect on the numbers entered though. It's a bit slow at the moment, but that can't be helped seeing as a lot of our 'photographers' are away/working/ill at the moment. :-??

If we keep both running, I'd like to throw in another idea for discussion (not my idea but put forward by someone else on the forum):

# A list of people who want to participate in the comp is made.
# The theme for the comp is chosen by the first on the list and they pick the winner.
# The next person on the list chooses the new theme and the winner etc..
Everyone on the list gets a turn to choose and pick the winner and it's always circulating.

Anyone can join the list of participants at any time and is added to the bottom of the list.
I can foresee problems when someone is away/busy and doesn't set a new theme, so
If the person at the top of the list doesn't post a new theme in 48 hours, the next person on the list should take over. What do you think? :-?

I agree Mandy that dropping one of the comps won't affect the numbers as at the moment it seems to be the same 4/5 taking part in both (or in the case of Rob, the same person :D ).

As you and edythuk suggest, I agree the rules ought to be as they are for the challenge. It seems to me that the assignment has tended to move in that direction anyway.

I must say I like the idea of a rotating chooser of the topic. Certainly I've run out of ideas and only after I posted this month's comp topic I realised we'd used it before. 8-| So for me it would be great to think that I might win and not then be "punished" by having to think of a topic! :D

Thanks Rob - great subject. I now have no excuse for not taking some photos. :D

You realise that you personally will now have caused the weather to change! In fact I think it's been getting better ever since you posted.

And thanks for putting the assignment in abeyance for the mo.

Just a quick question, how do you view the EXIF info on an attached photo? I've tried various combinations of clicking but can't work out how to do it.

Should be right click and then in the drop down menu click on 'see properties' or similar wording.

No, nothing like that, right clicking is the first thing I tried but thanks.

If you save the image you want to view onto your desktop and then right click you get to see the picture's properties that way.

Right clicking will only show the pictures properties, not the Exif.
To view EXIFs, you need to download/install an EXIF Viewer for your browser.
I use "Firefox" and use this add-on...https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... if-viewer/
This one should be OK for Internet Explorer..http://www.opanda.com/en/iexif/download.htm

Some photos have the EXIFs blocked or removed. Or the information doesn't always show when posting from Flickr etc.. Which is why it is stipulated that photos are posted as an attachment for the comps.

I think you can see the EXIF if you go to the "advanced" setting

This is the properties from Cat in a Phone Box. I just saved the photo to my desktop and then right clicked and clicked again on "advanced" on the summary page

According to this if one right clicks etc one is looking at the EXIF.

So you can. :-? But then you are infringing copyright by copying my photo! [-x ;)
I can see that way would be fine if you only want to view the odd photo, but not if your judging a comp where you need to see lots. ( Except in the case of recent comps. 8-| :) )
Also you have to copy the photo each time you want to view the Exif, whereas with an Exif viewer you don't need to.

Balham, I assumed Nettie meant how to view the full Exif details of a photo,( as shown in SPJ's attachment) not just the basic info available from the "view image info" by right clicking.
