I've posted this area so any photos to share, (but not for entry in the competition) and any discussions about the challenges can be aired without disrupting the actual competition thread. :)

Good idea Mandy. I'll change this to a sticky so that it will stay at the top of the Challenge page :) .

I'm going to be cheeky and ask Starless why he didn't enter his photo of the shadow cyclist into the comp. I thought that one was better than the entered ones. Image

Good question, Mandy!

I took that photo as a starter and was going to try a few more straight after when I knew I could improve it dramatically. I wanted to show that I was actually riding the bike! :o

Unfortunately, the battery chose that moment to run out and wouldn't let me take another shot. The next few outings on the bike were very cloudy without shadows.

I then decided to try some indoor studio shots and completely forgot about my "shadow cyclist." :|

I nearly tried some more yesterday but I know I can do it if required in the future.

Here's the shot for those who have never seen it........

Image

Here's some shadow shots I took yesterday, just for a laugh!

I like the trees Starless. Shame you didn't have the right lighting in time for the comp. :(

As for the 'Apparel' theme. Here's one I took this morning. 8-)

I have a question. Might seem a daft question, but then I am at times daft.

Why in the Photo Challenge is there the need for the EXIF to be visible, apart from the date being known?

If one submits photos to a competition (did loads years ago) one submits a print or a slide and it is solely the photo that is judged (as is being done on Photo For Life at the moment on ARTE). Perhaps if for the judges the choice came to between two or three or four then the judges might have wanted to know a bit more about the photographer but that was rare.

Because the Exif also shows all the info on what settings were used to take the shot, which can be helpful to those learning. All the photography sites I've seen have this as a stipulation for competitions.

I'd be surprised if anyone was judged on their EXIF data. Surely it is the shot itself that should count, not how the photographer got there ! It is purely for interest and can help if one of us wants to try a similar shot.

For example, if I wanted to take a night shot of a river, a bridge and some streetlights, I wouldn't have a clue how to go about it i.e. what settings I should use.
I can look at someone else's photos to see how he'd set up his camera and at least that would give me a starting point.

"Curves" should be an interesting competition - and I'm relieved spiralwotsits aren't allowed 'cos I can't get it on my Mac :(

I hope it does present a good challenge Blaze, it's actually something I like to look at so photographing them is as much fun. I could have gone for something I don't like, Macro would have been a good choice but that would have been unfair.

There is so much scope in this topic.... have fun punters

Found an interesting discussion on EXIF here. Was only looking because it seems that the ability to choose to display or not display the data is a Flickr option. Photobucket, well, the data is there. I have found the consensus is that people like the data, gosh, just the modern equivelant of saying 'taken with Nikon FM2, 200mm, Neopan 400 - F/8 - 1\200' or something :-?? .

Exactly..............only more proof rather than taking someone's word for it.

Like Blaze, I've found looking at people's EXIF data on Flickr very useful, particularly in the "early days." Looking to see what time of day it was to indicate the sort of light, what lens was used at what focal length, the ISO, the aperture and the shutter speed, it really does allow you to undertand what the thought processes were and how the result was achieved.

Of course, it also helps you record what you did without having to record it manually. More than useful. Especially when you've cocked it up and want to know why!

Obviously, the EXIF data can be used in a comp to prove the photo was taken in the right timeframe (if you have the date and time set correctly, that is.......has everyone changed their camera time by an hour this autumn?) and, to prove anything else for a comp. For all I know there may be comps when only a certain type of lens can be used or shots taken at a single aperture, though I've not seen any in my short time taking photos.

Ouch...it is a good question. On the basis of the Photo Challenge should we restrict to Digital...I still have film as well.....

Anyway a while back I entered a comp and it ran it's length till the winner was decided only a few days later the owner of the ORIGINAL image claimed copyright. The winner had used the image as a basis for his image and heavily tweaked it to win the comp. EXIF data ENSURES that there is a valid image to start with and it's not just a collection of components from the web.

I'm not saying that would happen here, this is a bit of fun but where prizesare available it does happen!!
