Following on from our discussions on The Wonders Of The Solar System, I thought I'd start a new topic on Dark Matter etc as the other thread probably wasn't the right place and this one could go on a bit......

Here's a link to an article which says that Einstein's theory holds and only theories which include dark matter make sense (at the moment, I add)......

An interesting article but I did not understand the statement "Einstein's theory says gravity arises from mass bending space-time" I was under the impression that it was not known what causes gravity. Can anyone shed any light on the subject?

Hi mik,

I think you need to read up on Einstein's Theory Of General Relativity. Probably better to read up on it than ask. Here's one place where you can read about it, though I haven't searched all round to find the best place.......

Imagine the surface of a trampoline to be the fabric of space time. Plonk a bowling bowl in the middle. The curvature it produces is how gravity works. A smaller object will roll towards it.

Sorry , I think you misunderstand me. The quote I highlighted says that gravity arises from mass bending space time. I understand (well prehaps comprehend) space time being warped in a gravitational field. That is not the same as saying gravity arises, (i.e. is caused by), mass bending space time. What interests me is, what creates gravity. My understanding was that there is no explanation for it at the moment (although I have a hazy recollection that the explanation is tied up with the discovery of the Higgs Boson)

Ah.....so, are you asking why things have mass, and thus cause gravitational attraction? Because then, you'd be right, in that there is no proven explanation for it. Of course, that applies to a lot of things, including why did the Big Bang happen (if it did, one might say...)

One hope for the Large Hadron Collider is the discovery of the theoretical particle, the Higgs Boson, which could have existed for a short period of time to give mass to other particles. Why this should do that, I don't know, so I'll have to read up about it, unless someone can tell me here.

Well, while you are working on it, here's a section from wiki.......

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higgs_boson

It seems there are "Higgless" theories, too. :-o

I'm still reading..........

Wel it appears to be all Maggie Thatchers fault!

Quote.

1. The Higgs Mechanism
Imagine a cocktail party of political party workers who are uniformly distributed across the floor, all talking to their nearest neighbours. The ex-Prime Minister enters and crosses the room. All of the workers in her neighbourhood are strongly attracted to her and cluster round her. As she moves she attracts the people she comes close to, while the ones she has left return to their even spacing. Because of the knot of people always clustered around her she acquires a greater mass than normal, that is she has more momentum for the same speed of movement across the room. Once moving she is hard to stop, and once stopped she is harder to get moving again because the clustering process has to be restarted.

In three dimensions, and with the complications of relativity, this is the Higgs mechanism. In order to give particles mass, a background field is invented which becomes locally distorted whenever a particle moves through it. The distortion - the clustering of the field around the particle - generates the particle's mass. The idea comes directly from the physics of solids. Instead of a field spread throughout all space a solid contains a lattice of positively charged crystal atoms. When an electron moves through the lattice the atoms are attracted to it, causing the electron's effective mass to be as much as 40 times bigger than the mass of a free electron.

The postulated Higgs field in the vacuum is a sort of hypothetical lattice which fills our Universe. We need it because otherwise we cannot explain why the Z and W particles which carry the weak interactions are so heavy while the photon which carries electromagnetic forces is massless.

Thanks, mik. I understand the theory now. I'm looking forward to finding out what CERN find.....or don't find! :-?

Here's something on Dark Flow.....

"The dark flow is controversial because the distribution of matter in the observed universe cannot account for it. Its existence suggests that some structure beyond the visible universe — outside our "horizon" — is pulling on matter in our vicinity."

YIKES! :-? :-o
