Thought this recent photo, taken by the Cassini probe, was stunning as it shows Saturn from a position inaccessible to earth-based telescopes:

what is the dark shape behind Saturn and why are the rings behind the planet? :-o

The pic is taken from behind Saturn, so dark shadows are thrown against the rings, which makes them appear to be seen through the planet (Saturn is blocking the Sun and the rings are illuminated from behind). The pic is actually a composite of photos taken with infrared, red and violet filters.
