Sad news about Tommy Lawrence. From an era when there were class goalkeepers in many teams unlike todays flappers and droppers http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/42634388

He was also known, rather unfairly, as 'The Log' (a play on his name, Log was, at that time, along with Lol, also a Merseyside slang term for anyone called Lawrence). He was also the first sweeper/goalkeeper in the UK, a type of play he worked out for himself.

RIP Tommy. I watched him at Anfield when I was about 10 through my early teens- great memories. I remember him in Liverpool's first European cup semi final venture when he had the ball kicked out of his hands against Inter Milan giving them the game, can't remember if they went on to win it.

They did go on to win it (1-0 against Benfica at the San Siro, i.e. home advantage). Some very dodgy refereeing decisions; there have been rumors for years that the ref was bribed - Inter certainly appear to have form according to football journalist Brian 'catenaccio' Glanville. Bob Paisley (then Shanks's 2iC) reportedly learned a lot from the encounter.
