It's that time of year again and I'm glued to it. Lots of familiar faces - Sam Sunderland's in the lead with the motos. Nani Roma's out of it after an accident - he's popular with everyone and has won Dakar both on a moto and with a car.

The cars are looking more buggy like than ever this year ....

France 4 (channel 14) - it starts around 18h50 and goes through until 20h55. I didn't watch it all - there's half an hour of 40 years of Dakar in the middle. It's good stuff and the scenery is amazing - those sand dunes are great !

I'm watching it on 14 too.

I'm following Laia Sanz, the Spanish girl. She did well last year and has become quite a celeb in her native town.

Great seeing Seb Loeb on TV 8-)

Laia Sanz did very well last year, if I remember rightly. Courageous girl !
I wish we saw more of the amateurs and people who aren't sponsored. Unfortunately, it's like the Tour and other sports - advertising and money orientated.

Just seen that Sam Sunderland had an accident and hurt his back ... and abandoned :(
I'll look at the day's replays when I have time ...

I saw that last night. He looked very bad. He tried to carry on at one point but got off his bike and collapsed.

I see Cyril Despres's car wrecked its back end when he went over a large stone - it's a question of whether they can repair it, and in time.
It's devastating to have to abandon so early on in the race - hope his car gets fixed ....

It looks as if Loeb's out now :o As far as I can gather (will watch replay later this evening), there was an accident and Loeb's co-pilot was badly injured.

Now Joan Barreda is out after an accident. They're falling like flies but the course seems really difficult this year. Plus they're at nearly 4000m near La Paz. Stephane Peterhansel sustained severe damage with his Peugeot and lost a lot of time while repairs were done.

It's good coverage on France 4 - perhaps not if your a lorry fan as there hasn't been much about them.

I don't know if anyone else is watching, but this Dakar is just unbelievable ... so many top riders out. Yesterday was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions but today it's Van Beuveren who has abandoned - he was doing brilliantly and leading overall. He had a bad fall and broke a collarbone not far from the stage finish.

There was some trouble when a Dutch quad driver accused Carlos Sainz of clipping the quad with his car. Sainz was given a 10 minute penalty but it appears that the Dutchman had already accused someone else of a misdemeanour and Sainz's explanation was perfectly vaid : there wasn't a scratch on the car that connected him with the quad.
